DUTCH
1720's ONION WINE
1720
This bottle almost certainly comes from the
Netherlands or Northern Europe , and dates from
around 1720/1730. It has an applied lip string, a
tapering neck swelling out to the classic bulbous
onion shape. This shape follows the earlier "shaft and
globe" bottles. This example was found in the Berbice
River in South America, close to a Dutch fort built
to protect Dutch trading interests. Vast numbers of
such bottles were exported to the colonies- they
acted as good ballast weight on board ship. There are
some mild surface scratchesand base wear as ual, but
no major chips or cracks that I can see.
