BOOK OF HOURS LEAF
Circa 1510 Book of Hours Leaf, "DIVES AND LAZARUS"
Anon
1510
This Illuminated leaf on vellum was produced in Paris
in around 1510. The leaf is printed with a complete
overpainting on the Verso with a scene showing
Dives, a rich man, with his wife feasting at a cloth
covered table . Dives is ordering his servants to
throw out the starving Lazarus, who has dogs licking
at the sores on his legs.He is shown again framed in
the window- the poor man at the rich man's gate. This
scene would have introduced the penitential psalms in
a Book of Hours .This is a wonderful naive piece of
medieval painting showing a lively feast scene with
servants pouring wine, Dives and his wife, and a
table and sideboard with vessels and plates. The
Recto has printed border panels including a
crucifixion scene , Christ showing his wounds and two
workmen with a saw. A great leaf for the dining room.
