POLYCHROME CARVED FIGURE
C16th CARVED FIGURE of JOSEPH FATHER OF CHRIST and
THE CHRIST CHILD
This striking carving approximately 73cm. tall
including the base,shows St. Joseph holding the
Christ Child . It dates from the C16th and we think
it is Northern European, possibly German, and
probably carved in lime wood.Much of the original
polychrome paint still adheres to the carving.Over
the years it has suffered damage, and much of the
gesso filling is missing from the left side of the
piece in particular, and later nails hold on some of
the original attached pieces loosely . There is also
a large hole in the head of the large figure, and a
staff would have originally been in his right hand.
This piece is very heavy and fragile, and I would be
reluctant to ship it. Delivery might be possible
however, and I could arrange to bring it to London or
provincial Book Fairs. Please look at the several
images of this piece, which although worn, has a
profound serenity and presence which befits its
subject
