For the Month of May 1719. Pp 40, disbound and re-
sewn with hemp cord using original stab holes. This
original issue of this classic "Mercury" News Book
has an interesting piece on rumours of Spanish Troops
under the command of the late Lords Marshal Seaforth
and Tullibardine landing in Kintail. "In the 10th
Instant, C. Boyle in his majesty's Ship the Worster
being arriv'd before Donan Castle, was inform'd by a
Deserter, That the Rebels were encamped within two
Miles, to the Number of 4700 Men; but that did not
hinder him from Battering the Fort and under cover of
the Fire he sent two Boats mann'd and arm'd commanded
by two Lieutenants who landed at the Foot of the
castle, attacked and took it after a small
Resistance; but as the Rebels lay within two miles,
it was judged proper to blow it up." The account
continues with details of prisoners, stores and
armaments taken, and the evidence of a Lieutenant
taken at the castle, who states that the rebels
number 307 private Men and 19 officers all Spanish.
The commander of the force apparently expected 10,000
men in arms to join him. It is expected that the
rebels will shortly surender to Major General
Wightman being on the march with 1500 men from
Inverness " for what else can he do being deprived of
all Succours whatsoever; and being not used to live
in Mountains as the Highlander." An interesting News
Book with other intelligence from all over Europe.
