of the Pretender in Scotland. Major General Wightman
marches to the head of Glenshell " a considerable
pass which I was told the Enemy had resolved to
defend." In the event the rebels withdraw to a pass
called Strachell and battle begins at about five in
the afternoon, continuing until past Eight in the
evening "when it pleased God to give us an entire
Victory over them." The rebels consist of 300 Spanish
troops, 1640 Highlanders and another force described
as a Carps a-part of 500 Highlanders whose intention
was to capture the English baggage train. After his
victory, Wightman takes a tour through the
countryside "to terrify the rebels" ..."by burning
the Houses of the guilty, and preserving those of the
