FANNY KEMBLE. POLICE ABUSES. CONVICT HULK
THE AGE 25 October 1829
Printed and Published By A Durham at The Age Office
1829
Pp 8 each printed in three columns. Disbound with
glue traces on spine and a little ragged to the
spine, but all in all perfectly readable and
collectable- an original issue of this classic
English newspaper with good content. Page seven has
two good stories, with a half column on Police Abuses
in the City. The author accuses the Police of
appearing "vastly supine and careless of the many
things that are not as they should be within the
Liberties of London " with thieves in Fleet street
and prostitutes unmolested by the
police .Interestingly, a bookseller with a
blasphemous cartoon of God is also cited ! Underneath
this article is a shortish piece (perhaps 3 column
inches) on the convict Hulk "The Justitia" lying off
the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich- which is in such a bad
state of repair that it has been brought alongside
the wharf for fear of sinking ,as she has been making
up to five feet of water in her hold every tide.
Upwards of 200 prisoners on the lower deck nearly
lost their lives and have been pumping for their
lives. A good piece. There is also a nice piece
on "Theatricals" and Fanny Kemble, whose services
have been secured for the Covent Garden Theatre with
the gift of an inscribed Golden Bracelet (text of the
inscription is given in the account) with mentions
of "that mad wag Charles Kemble" and other noted
theatricals of the times. Perhaps six or seven column
inches coverage on the latter piece.
