PETERLOO MASSACRE; 20 original issues of The Morning
Chronicle Newspaper for 1819 with details of the
Peterloo Massacre. The newspapers are disbound, and
some have minor weakness to the spine, but are
generally in Very Good+ condition- better than might
be expected for neswspapers of this date. All the
papers are complete, two leaves (giving four pages)
each page in five columns, and bearing original tax
stamps .Some papers are trimmed closely to the top
edge (when bound) and a few have marginal tears or
weakness, but all are in readable and collectable
condition. Radical reformer Hunt is committed for
conspiracy to commit High Treason , along with
others, and good long accounts are given of their
examination. The charge was shortly changed to a
seditious conspiracy . Hunt is bailed and his carriage
is later drawn by female reformers and then male
reformers with a large crowd attending. There is also
a full list of those killed and wounded- listing those
killed and wounded by sabre cuts, shot, trampling of
the cavalry , the truncheons of special constables and
crushing by the multitude. Other radical meetings are
described in many of the papers, which give a full
flavour of the times.
