(EARLE, JOHN) Charles 1
Eikon Basilike, Vel Imago Regis Caroli in Illis Suis Aerumnis et Solitudine
S.B. J.Williams & F. Eglesfield1649
First Latin translation of Eikon Basilike, made by John Earle, later Bishop of Salisbury at apparently at trhe request of Charles 11. This copy is lited in Madan as no.42 and calls for a portrait of the prince between pp230/231 although this is often not present, and was not bound in to this copy. This copy bears the following inscription "Jane Digby her booke donum charissimi amici Eliz Digby". I have been trying to link this to Sir Kenelm Digby's family (he of the sympathetical powder etc) or the Digbys connected with Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot, but so far without success. Clearly more work needs doing here. A Jane Digby married "Starvation" Hungerford, a noted gambler, who got through a number of estates in his lifetime, so there might be possibilities for the researcher here too. This copy, with fold out plate of Charles 1, is bound in quarter tan calf to spine, and blue marbled paper rubbed to edges and corners over boards with an attractive red lettering piece. Corners a little bumped, all edges dark blue, black. A curious work, with a potentially valuable inscription.
