The Morning Chronicle 21.3.1825. Printed and Published by Mr W.Clement, Strand London.Pp4 Disbound. An original and complete issue in Very Good condition, trimmed at bottom edge of two pages slightly affecting text. This paper contains a very good description of "Mr Mathews" ("The Clown with Tippity Wicket and The Life of a clown 1823, 1844 (assisted by Mr. M. Ellar - Harlequin, Mr. Gardner - Pantaloon, Miss Williams - Columbine- information from David Coke at www.vauxhallgardens.com) and his performances . A long (two thirds of a large column) piece giving details of his jokes, patter, characterisations etc. Although the location of his performance is not given, the newspaper columnist hopes that their account will excite a strong desire to see Mr Mathews. A very unusual account of a pantomime/clown performance. There are also good pieces on Boxing, with a letter from Pat.Halton who expresses a wish to meet with previous challengers before retiring at the end of the season. There are further pugilism reports and a "Death by fighting" piece. Good boxiana.
