NEWSPAPER
THE NEWS , Sunday June 4th 1820. SUNDAY
NEWSPAPERS,AGRICULTURAL DISTRESS, EXECUTION By SABRE,
ADULTERATION of BEER Case.
T.A.Phipps
1820
The newspaper is printed on both sides of four pages.
Each of the eight pages is printed in three columns.
There is part of the original tax stamp showing on
the front page, and the paper is entirely original
and in good tidy condition, with small nicks in the
spine from disbinding. There is a good discussion of
Sunday Newspapers on the front page, and a
substantial section on Agricultural Distress.
From "Frankfort" comes the account of the EXECUTION
of Sandt "the assasin of Kotzbue ". A gruesome
execution by beheading with a sabre. Handkerchiefs
are dipped in the unfortunate victim's blood and the
chair he is seated on is sold to a Society.A
gruesome account, perhaps 8 column inches. There is
also a good long piece on the back page on the
adulteration of BEER. The culprit asks a publican if
he would like to make three barrels of porter from
two, and shows him a stone jar containing a compound
of burnt sugar, chilli peppers , copperas ,and oil of
vitriol amongst other things which he mixes with 18
gallons of water and finings. The Excise men lie in
wait on a second occasion and capture the culprit,
but he later decamps. A good story in this classic
English newspaper in very tidy condition.
