NEWSPAPER
THE NEWS May 28th 1820 DOVER SMUGGLER RIOT
T.A.Phipps
1820
This classic English newspaper is printed on both
sides of four pages. Each of the eight sides is
printed in three columns, and the original tax stamp
is visible on the front page. The paper is disbound
with nicks in the spine from binding, but the paper
is otherwise in very tidy condition. There are some
small stains and corners are a little folded, one
with small loss not affecting the text. There is a
very good SMUGGLING story from DOVER in KENT. Some
smugglers having been captured and imprisoned (and
due to be sent to the navy as pressed men) are freed
by a large mob who attack the prison, unroofing it
and breaking down part of the wall. One of the
rioters is captured and put into a chaise with two
constables, but this is later stopped, and the rioter
freed, hand cuffs being removed with cold chisels.
There are further interesting stories- a woman
accused of stealing from a collection plate, a good
piece on THE CORONATION , and a number of other good
stories. In all a tidy copy of this newspaper.
