THE REHEARSAL Numb.36
Printed and Sold By the Booksellers of London and Westminster
1705
The Rehearsal newspaper Numb. 36 is printed on both
sides of a single leaf in two columns. The paper is a
little toned and there are tiny stab holes in the
gutter margin from binding. Rehearsal ,edited by the
radical Charles Leslie was a critic of its rival
paper The Observator. For a number of issues,
Rehearsal was titled The Rehearsal of Observator &c."
as a snub at Observator. The content of the paper
takes the form of a conversation between "Country-
man" and Rehearsal. The headlines for this issue anre
printed under the Masthead, thus; The last Squeek of
the Church of England. Of the Assembly of Divines at
Westminster. The Man of War call'd The Moderate. Of
Out-Writing the Whiggs. Particularly on their scheme
of Government in the people. Which Runs up to
Blasphemy. A rare survival of this fascinating
newspaper giving a glimpse of early English
journalsim.
