NEWSPAPER; NELSON,BALLOONING, WINDMILL, BOXING
NORWICH MERCURY ,and Yarmouth,Lynn and Ipswich Herald
Printed and Published By Richard Mackenzie Bacon and Co
1815
This newspaper consists of four large format pages,
each printed in six columns, a mixture of editorial
and advertisements. The spine is a little weak with
some damage from disbinding, and the paper is folded
and a little toned, but in collectable and perfectly
readable condition-about average for a paper of this
age. There is a very good NELSON piece on the front
page, being an advert for a Subscription Fund set up
at a County Meeting convened by the High Sheriff. It
is decided to place the monument in a coastal
position, and that Yarmouth would be a good site. The
monument is to be a column with suitable ornaments,
the design for which will decided from invited
entries. There follows a long list of Norfolk
worthies and the amounts that they have given- a good
half column of coverage. Page two has a good
BALLOONING piece, with a subscription started for
the relief of MR STEWARD the balloonist whose balloon
is torn by trees on his ascent, and then entirely
rent to pieces by the crowds upon its descent. It is
stated that the balloon was his only property, by
which he earned his living- a very nice long piece
including list of subscribers. Page three bears an
unusual WINDMILL vignette- a crude metal cut of a
four bladed mill about an inch tall in an advert for
Drawing Seeds at HEMPNALL MILL. There is also a good
BOXING piece on the back page , where MANBY takes on
CROXLEY in a bout lasting for 126 rounds over two
hours- along account with plenty of the sporting cant
of the day-claret and all- in about 12 column inches
of coverage. A very full copy of this paper.
